CO2 laser is part of a laser resurfacing process. The laser emits energy of a wavelength of 10,600 nanometers. Water within the skin cells absorbs this wavelength, resulting in the ablation of the superficial layer of the skin. As a result, this technique is used to treat a variety of skin issues.

  1. CO2 laser can be used to treat:

  • Warts
  • Skin scars or birthmarks
  • Age spots
  • Skin tags
  • Sun-damaged skin
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Syringoma-harmless small clusters of firm papules on your face (usually near the eyes) from overgrowth of sweat glands
  1. Preparing for CO2 laser

Arrive with clean skin void of lotion, oil or other agents. CO2 laser skin resurfacing is usually done with local anesthesia, so there is minimal discomfort during the procedure. Numbing cream may be applied directly onto the skin or sometimes local infiltration.

  1. After CO2 laser procedure

  • Avoid exposing the wound to water, especially during the first 24 hours after treatment
  • Applying medical plaster for 7 days after treatment can help prevent water exposure. If the medical plaster falls off, cleanse the treated skin with saline, apply antibacterial ointment and use medical plaster as recommended by the doctor
  • Avoid exposure of sunlight for 2-4 weeks. Use sunscreen with SPF higher than 30
  • Avoid picking, peeling or scrubbing, which can cause scarring
